Who Should take Reductil

Reductil is a prescribed medication that helps a clinically obese person to lose weight. A person is classed as being obese when fat accumulates in the body's fat cells to such a serious degree that it rapidly increases the risk of obesity-associated diseases and mortality.

This fat can be distributed in the body in a number of different ways. This can be on the stomach where the person would be described as apple-shaped, or on the hips and thighs which would be pear-shaped. The method of calculating obesity and overweight is the Body Mass Index (BMI). This is calculated as your weight in kg divided by your height in metres squared. People of average weight are considered to have a BMI between 18.5 and 25 (kg/m2), and people with a BMI of 25 to 30 (kg/m2) are considered overweight, while people with a BMI of over 30 (kg/m2) are considered obese.

How then can taking Reductil help in weight loss and how long should the overweight person take Reductil? The active ingredient in the medication Reductil is sibutramine hydrochloride monohydrate, which is a type of anti-obesity medicine. It works by affecting neurotransmitters in the brain. Neurotransmitters are chemicals that are stored in nerve cells and are involved in transmitting messages between the nerve cells. Reductil prevents two of these neurotransmitters, noradrenaline and serotonin, from being reabsorbed back into the nerve cells.  Reductil must be taken in conjunction with a healthy diet and exercise routine. Reductil is only to be used in a controlled way for a short period and if you are not losing weight while taking Reductil, then you need to discontinue the treatment.

Your weight should be monitored while you are taking Reductil. If you are not responding adequately to this medicine, i.e. if you have not lost at least five per cent of your body weight within three months, or if you put on more than 3kg at any stage after previously losing weight, you will need to stop taking Reductil.  It should be noted that Reductil should not be taken for longer than one year.
